The 2013 Amgen
Tour of California is underway.
The Sticky Bottle Team will have daily blog posts of the 8-day,
8-stage race. The first stage was
completed on Mother’s Day in Escondido.
Stage 2 takes the riders to Murrieta for the start with the finish in
Greater Palm Springs. The NBC Sports Network has the TV coverage. The SBT loves to hear the dulcet tones of Phil and Paul.
Stage 1 of the 2013 Amgen Tour of California
kicked-off in San Diego County for the first time since 2009. The route
included an 11,000 vertical climb at 5,000 ft. elevation at Mt. Palmar. The
first stage winner in Escondido was Lieuwe Westra (NED) of Vacansoleil - DCM Pro
Cycling who crossed the finish four seconds ahead of Francisco Mancebo
Perez (ESP).
The largest cycling
event in America, the 2013 Amgen Tour
of California is a Tour de France-style cycling road race, created and
presented by AEG, that challenges the world’s top professional cycling teams to
compete along a demanding course that stretches across nearly 750 miles of
scenic California roadways, highways and coastlines. The race concludes Sunday, May 19.
We were wondering
about Amgen and AEG. Here is some info…
Amgen discovers,
develops, manufactures and delivers human therapeutics. A biotechnology pioneer
since 1980, Amgen was one of the first companies to realize the new science’s
promise by bringing safe and effective medicines from lab, to manufacturing
plant, to patient. Amgen therapeutics
have helped millions of people around the world in the fight against cancer,
kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, bone disease and other serious illnesses.
AEG is one of the leading sports and entertainment
presenters in the world. AEG, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Anschutz
Company, owns or controls a collection of companies including facilities such
as STAPLES Center, The Home Depot Center, Sprint Center, The O2, Nokia Theatre
L.A. LIVE and Best Buy Theater Times Square; sports franchises including the
Los Angeles Kings (NHL), two Major League Soccer franchises, two hockey
franchises operated in Europe, management of privately held shares of the Los
Angeles Lakers, the Bay to Breakers foot race and the Amgen Tour of California cycling road race; AEG Live, the organization’s
live-entertainment division, is a collection of companies dedicated to all
aspects of live contemporary music performance, touring and a variety of
programming and multi-media production.
What’s an event
nowadays without the requisite corporate tie-ins?
Another aspect of the ATOC that fans will hear about is the Ride 2
Recovery (R2R) program. “The mission of Ride 2 Recovery is to improve the health and wellness of healing
heroes through mental and physical rehabilitation programs that feature cycling
as the core activity.” In 2013, R2R is partnering with the Amgen Tour of California, featuring
three ATOC Honor Rides to help raise funds. Palmdale, Escondido and Santa Rosa are the
host cities, where cyclists ride parts of the professional cycling course,
cross the actual finish line in Escondido on May 12 and Santa Rosa on May 19,
and importantly, ride alongside healing heroes on a non-competitive, fun ride. More info is at the website: www.ride2recovery.com.
Stay tuned all this
week for information, fun stuff and updates on the ATOC. Visit our website www.stickybottleteam.net and this blog early and often!
